Mick Schumacher

The son of Formula 1 great Michael Schumacher honored the 25th anniversary of his father’s first F1 win, the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, by driving demonstration laps in his dad’s old car before Sunday’s race in Belgium. Mick, 18, a driver in the developmental F3 series, drove the 1994 F1 model of the Benetton B194 that his father drove to the first of his record seven world titles. Michael Schumacher’s 91 wins are also a record. “It was awesome,” Mick said after the crowd’s applause. “To be able to drive the F1 car is amazing and I’m really honored.” Michael, 48, is still recovering from a 2013 skiing accident.

The Olympic figure skating champion will not defend her title at next year’s Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, because of an injury. Her coach, two-time Olympic gold medalist Evgeny Plushenko, did not provide details on the injury. He told Russian media, “We all hoped we’d get this injury cured, but unfortunately it hasn’t happened. The injury is still causing problems, she can’t manage full training sessions and it’s not right to go to competitions in this state.” Sotnikova stunned South Korea’s Yuna Kim for gold in the 2014 Sochi Games amid intense debate over the judging.
