Trump, May call Putin’s nuclear weapons talk ‘irresponsible’

President Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims of new nuclear weapons “irresponsible.”

Trump and May spoke over the phone Sunday, the White House said, and addressed Putin’s comments from a few days earlier.

Putin said in a nationally televised annual address that Russia has at least four new weapons, including an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching nearly any target in the world that makes defense systems “useless.” He added that new U.S. policies have “raised concerns” in Russia.

Trump and May also discussed Trump’s recently announced plan to impose 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and 10 percent tariffs on aluminum imports.

May expressed “deep concern” over Trump’s plan, telling the president that “multilateral action was the only way to resolve the problem of global overcapacity in all parties’ interests,” according to a Downing Street spokesperson.

Trump’s plan has drawn criticism from U.S. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, and international officials who expressed concerns it will start a trade war.

Trump has defended the move, saying trade wars are “good and easy to win!”
