Facebook creates plan to verify identity of campaign ad buyers

Facebook is planning to use postcards sent through the mail to verify the identities of people trying to purchase advertisements pertaining to U.S. elections.

“If you run an ad mentioning a candidate, we are going to mail you a postcard and you will have to use that code to prove you are in the United States,” Katie Harbath, Facebook’s global director of policy programs,” said at a conference of the National Association of Secretaries of State, according to Reuters.

The postcards will be used to verify the identities and locations of people hoping to purchase ads mentioning specific candidates, she said. The mail verification will not apply to those purchasing issue-based advertisements, according to Reuters.

The announcement came a day after special counsel Robert Mueller indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for their alleged roles in a campaign to influence and disrupt the 2016 presidential election.

The indictment sheds light on how the Russians used Facebook and other social media sites to sew chaos in the election and support the candidacy of President Trump .

Facebook and other sites have faced scrutiny for failing to detect the efforts, and are facing heavy pressure to clamp down on users who may be trying to use the sites to spread political discord and division.
