Georgia Alice “Pavlola” shirt dress, $689. Dinosaur Designs “Mineral” drop earrings in Rock Swirl, $230.
If there’s one trend fashion forecasters agree is big for 2017, it’s shirting. A mannish style shirt has been fashion staple since women adopted them for themselves back in the 40s, but this season we’re looking at the reworked shirt – shirting but not as we know it.
Off the shoulder, extra-long sleeves, collarless, long line tunics, dresses, cropped and with cutaways are what we are seeing on the street style set – the fashion editors, bloggers and attendees of all the big fashion shows that act as a barometer for how far a trend can go ‘in real in life’.
The rules are few: a crisp cotton (ideally poplin) and the colours neutral – pertaining to your typical businessman’s wardrobe (stark white, pale blue or pinstripe) otherwise it’s anything goes. Like this Georgia Alice dress with asymmetrical cinching it’s the idea of a crisp white shirt in a modern design that gives it a fresh and up to minute feel. The good old fashioned button down shirt dress is getting a good a run too, updated with a cocoon like silhouette as seen at Phillip Lim and long sleeves and tails at DKNY.
Pale blue pinstripes or banker stripes get a feminine update with pretty wraparound feature and puffy three quarter sleeves on this Zara shirt. Adding a girly element to a such a masculine garment creates a juxtaposition that lots of designers are having fun with at the moment, we’ve seen frills, bows and ruffled sleeves aplenty.
Zara shirt, $50, skirt, $70, and shoes $119. Dinosaur Designs “Liquid Chain” earrings in gold, $380.
Oversized sleeves continue to reign as a mini trend across all collections, for the shirt the unfolded cuff is a clever play on this. And many a fashion blogger have been known to wear their shirts back to front and unbuttoned for a little back and shoulder action but only die hards need apply here, better to go for a stylish tailored shirt sans buttons like this one from Strateas Carlucci.
Strateas Carlucci shirt, $713, and Jacquemus “Guardian” wide leg pants, $755, from Parlour X. Dinosaur Designs “Liquid Chain” earrings in gold, $380. Zara slides, $70.
Puffy sleeves always remind me of the pirate shirt Seinfeld episode, however there’s nothing unbecoming about this version from Zara. Sleeves continue to be a major feature this season and as designers move away from bell sleeves they’re looking for other ways to add interest. It seems there’s endless ways to rework the classic shirt and we’re yet to see all of them.
