Celebrities who come from a land Down Under can breathe a sigh of relief and stop sucking in their stomachs because Daily Mail Australia has changed its policy when it comes to “fat-shaming”.

The British tabloid, that launched its Sydney branch in January 2014, has decided to change its ways following the onslaught of criticism it received for running a story about Channel 7 Sunrise host, Samantha Armytage, 40, wearing “giant granny panties”.

Channel 7 Sunrise host, Samantha Armytage forced an apology from Daily Mail Australia.

A source close to the publication told Fairfax Media there was a “panic” following the backlash and the showbiz team that runs the “sidebar of shame” were spoken to about aiming to “bring up the quality of the publication”.

They added: “More stories are now being sent to be legalled before being set live for extra precautions.”

The original story, which largely consists of paparazzi photos of the television presenter taken while she was grocery shopping in Bondi, was published in December under the headline: “Sunrise host Sam Armytage dares to bare with giant granny panties showing a visible line as she steps out in Sydney … after slamming rumours she’s dating Channel Seven colleagues.”

“The TV personality’s oversized granny panties showed through the garment with a clearly visible line,” one sentence read.

Armytage said she felt “really sorry” for the “poor bastard” who had to write the story. “I cannot imagine having such a soul-destroying job that would require you to breathlessly describe a strange woman’s underwear as your occupation,” she told News Corp.

It is believed she threatened legal action, and a few days later the publication amended its original online story to include an apology and edited any reference to her underwear.
