Mercedes-AMG’s new Porsche Panamera rival is spotted on the road after the concept’s Geneva Motor Show debut
After the concept graced the 2017 Geneva Motor Show stands, the new Mercedes-AMG GT four-door has been spied on German roads in disguise for the first time. It’s set to rival the Porsche Panamera when it arrives in 2018.
Although wrapped in the typical prototype body cladding, it’s clear that the concept’s overall profile will transfer over to production. The long, low bonnet is retained, as are the slim side windows, thick side haunches and sloping roofline. The concept’s silver and gold wheels are replaced by black items here, hiding some serious-looking performance brakes.
The four-door coupe concept at Geneva was built by Mercedes-AMG to “herald the further extension of the AMG GT family”. It’s the first model to use the EQ Power+ name, which denotes that it’s a performance hybrid from the brand, using a mix of petrol and electric power for maximum performance.
It’s the second bespoke AMG model, following on from the two door AMG GT range of hot coupes and roadsters and distinctly different in concept from AMG-tuned Mercedes saloons such as the E 63.
The profile of the concept is clearly related to the AMG GT coupe, with a long and low curved bonnet, steeply raked windscreen and wide track. Details such as the ‘Panamerica’ vertical grille design and slim rear tail-lights are carried over, too. The concept features a centrally-mounted exhaust flanked by a carbon-fibre rear diffuser, while the door handles are Tesla-style pop out items. Huge two-tone wheels and a new ‘hot red’ liquid-metal shade paint help it stand out.
There’s a distinct aerodynamic focus for the AMG GT Concept, with hidden cameras in place of exterior door mirrors and moving radiator shutters in the air intakes that divert air where required for maximum efficiency – like the AMG GT R. The aero optimised wheels hide high performance carbon-ceramic brakes, too.
The familiar AMG 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 powers the concept, helped by an additional electric motor. There’s no word on power output yet, but we expect north of 600bhp – as AMG says the 0-62mph time is less than three seconds.
Handling tech includes 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, so power can be sent to each wheel individually to help stability and cornering speed.
The battery system is derived from tech used on the Mercedes F1 car, and AMG says it’s “more powerful than conventional hybrid batteries, but at the same time more compact and lighter”. The car can run in electric-only or engine-only modes as well as the standard mode that combines both.
Details of what exactly we can expect from the production car are thin on the ground, but we know we’ll see a more road-ready model debut in 2018 for release soon after.
