An Apple CarPlay/Android Auto upgrade kit will be available for all models fitted with an MZD multimedia system.

Mazda Australia will offer an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto upgrade kit for all Mazda vehicles fitted with an MZD multimedia system, which was first made available with the Mazda3 in 2014.

While the Japanese carmaker has yet to finalise pricing, it has confirmed that the kit will be available later this year.

“Mazda Australia will offer, by year’s end, an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto upgrade kit, which will work seamlessly with our MZD system and commander (knob),” said Mazda Australia marketing director Alastair Doak.

“So a customer buying a CX-8, or any other SUV or car will be able to have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in their vehicle by the end of the year.”

The upgrade will involve the installation of a hardware module and a software update, which can be conducted by dealers, and will not affect the look of the multimedia display.

“It will look exactly like what we currently have except you will be able to use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,” said Mr Doak.

Currently the only vehicle in Mazda’s range that includes smartphone mirroring capabilities is the BT-50 workhorse that eschews the MZD unit in favour of an Alpine multimedia system.
